Missions Update

The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in Him. The LORD is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.
Lamentations 3:24-26

MISSIONS CHRONICLE
Read letters from the Missionary.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

We have been trying for a number of months to enter into Vietnam. A number of people have attempted to help us including the Honorable Lindsey Graham, a Senator from South Carolina, and Mr. Jeffrey Bergner who is the Assistant Secretary of Legislative Affairs from the United States Department of State Who both sent letters to the Vietnam Embassy urging the Ambassador to allow a Family Radio team to be given visas.

Additionally, others have joined together in contacting the Vietnamese Embassy in Washington D.C. trying to get us the visas needed to travel into the Country. To this point, nothing has worked.

I have decided to push our effort up to the highest authority that we have in our country, President George Bush who has in time past shown a willingness to speak up for our Christian faith.

I am sending a letter to our President encompassing all of our efforts; while describing Family Radio that already broadcasts into the country and has absolutely no political agenda.

Please pray for our efforts that if this is in accord with the will of our Lord and God, Jesus Christ, then all of this work of man comes to fruition by the only one that can work the work that can bless the souls of these precious people that live within the country of Vietnam.

President Bush has already twice met with the Vietnam Ambassador, Nguyen Tam Chien, on different occasions unrelated to our need. Let us pray that this Ambassador, who is the one who can easily open the door of opportunity be touched by our Lord should it be His eternal will.

May our precious Lord touch you with His Eternal Word,
David Morrell, Mission Coordinator

Letter from From David Morrell to the U.S. Department of State regarding the mission to Vietnam   (2/1/08):

Dear Ambassador:
I am contacting you concerning the ongoing desire for our international radio station to visit your beautiful country of Vietman. (Please see the attached letter sent to President George W.Bush)

Our intention would be to send forth a small group of our representatives coming into Vietman for an eleven day visit, in order to hand out a limited number of brochures testifying of our Christian faith. We do not desire to set up any permanent work in your country, nor do we want to establish a radio station. We have effected these type Misson trips for the last seventeen years all over the world, and this would only be a continuation of our effort to praise and honor the name of our God throughout the entire world. Our sole intenstion is to enter into Vietnam and meet the people within your beautiful country to share the Word of God, and then more on to other selected cities worldwide. Our continued intention with these Mission trips is solely to honor our Lord and we have absolutely no political agenda.

Prior to your appointment by President Nguyen Minh Triet as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the United States in October 2007, I have forwarded an initial letter that I have received from Mr.Jeffrey Bergner, the Assistant Secretary of Legislative Affairs in the US State Department to you Embassy informing us that he had been in contact with your Embassy and said, "the Vietnam Embassy had allowed selected groups to visit Vietnam in order to conduct religious activities." we were greatly encouraged with this information, and when I saw you picture on the Embassy Website hand in hand with our President; I became convinced that a man of you stature would only have to speak a word, and we would able to fulfill our desire to travel into your country.

Inasmuch as there has been no credible reply from this initial letter, I thought it good to write to our President, the honorable George W. Buth, who is both a great proponent of human rights and a friend of both yourself and the Vietnamese people. He evidently realized that this request represents not only his desire, but that of the unnumbered listeners we have, by the grace of God, throughout the entire world. Please note that portion of his return, the letter that reads, "We have also asked the Embassy of Vietnam to look into your request to visit Vietnam and to provide an answer to you directly. Should a satisfactory reply not be forthcoming for the Embassy in the near future, we will seek to raise your request at senior levels with Vietnam in Hanoi or Washington."

I was deeply impressed as I read your biography describing your credentials as a career diplomat, and I feel deeply honored to write inasmuch as I consider both you and your Embassy the voice of Vietnam in our country.

Please look at our website (Familyradio.com). You will quickly see that our station extends to virtually every country in the world including AM broadcasting throughout all of China and Shortwave into Vietnam. We currently broadcast into more than 100 major cities in the United States including the Washington/Baltimore (107.9 FM) area, and we now, by the grace of God, have the largest Christian radio station in the world. Our radio signal goes out to millions of people daily, and much good will can be generated between your country and ours as we show forth your desire to allow residents of our country to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ thereby giving credence to your 2005 law on religion which enshrines the promotion of human rights and religious freedom. I was further heartened when reading the comments of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung telling the US commission on International Religious Freedom the Viet Nam is willing to speak with the US as to any differences in religion. what a wondeful first step our visit would make in order to show forth our shared values.

I praise our God that both your Country and mine seem to be moving closer together, and my strong feeling is that you can play a prominent role in achieving even further progress. I truly believe that our visit into Vietnam will help cement a stronger friendship, and provide God's blessing on both of us as we pursue this goal.

Please contact me so that I might come to your embassy to meet with either yourself or a designated representative in order to further explore this needed visit to your beautiful country. I will bring a sample of the brochure that we intend to distribute pending your approval, and will be more than willing to answer any questions regarding our desired visit into Vietnam.

Respectfully submitted:
David Raymond Morrell

Letter from the U.S. Department of State regarding the mission to Vietnam   (1/3/08):

United States Depar6ment of State
Washington, D.C. 20520

Dear Mr. Morrell
Thank you for your letter to President Bush concerning your efforts to conduct missionary work in Vietnam, The President has asked the State Department to look into the matter and respond on his behalf.

One of the U.S. government's highest priorities in Vietnam is the promotion of human rights and religious freedom. Vietnam is one country where we have seen an expansion in the freedom to worship in recent years.

In 2005, Vietnam introduced a new law on religion enshrining the freedom to worship, which led to the release of prisoners being held in connection with their faith, and the registration of hundreds of Protestant congregations. As a result of this progress and steps taken to sustain it, in November 2006 the State Depar6ment removed Vietnam from its list of "Countries of Particular Concern," made up of countries deemed to be serious violators of religious freedom.

Vietnam can do more to advance religious freedom, in particular by accelerating the registration of new denominations and the training of local officials in the new legal framework. We will continue to monitor and press for progress. It is also important that we recognize progress when it does occur.

We have passed the details of you situation to the Department of State's office of International religious Freedom. We have also asked the Embassy of Vietnam to look into your request to visit Vietnam and to provide an answer to you directly. Should a satisfactory reply not be forthcoming from the Embassy in the near future, we will seek to raise your request at senior levels with Vietnam in Hanoi or Washington.

Sincerely,
Robert Rapson
Director
Office of Mainland Southeast Asia
