TRINIDAD & GUYANA / September 2001

MISSION TO TRINIDAD & GUYANA
1st LETTER 9/20/01

"And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things"!

Romans 10:15

Our group of 10 missionaries arrived in Port of Spain, Trinidad late last night from various parts of the US and one travelled from the Netherlands.
This Caribbean country is on the Southern end of the chain of Island nations called the West Indies and is a melting pot of various ethnic groups and religions. English is the official language.
Our leader learned from an Immigration Agent at the airport that "missionaries" needed a special visa; but a short form describing our purpose and a $9.00 fee were all that were required to obtain the visa.
After a short night, everyone was eager to get to work right after breakfast distributing our supply of 80,000 "Does God Love You?" tracts and Family Radio materials and to see what kind of reaction the people would have to the Gospel. message.
By God's grace, the people were polite and very receptive to the tracts and other materials, and the retention rate was excellent. We found very few tracts discarded after a full day's work in the heart of the city.
We thank our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for all the many blessings we received today through the friendly acceptance of the tracts and the interest many showed to the message of the True Gospel of Grace. Everyone had opportunities to witness to numerous people about the Gospel and the resources of Family Radio, especially the short wave programming and Family Radio School of the Bible.
Could it be that God will save many souls in this part of the world through this effort? That is certainly the prayer of each one of us, and we convet the prayers of our Family Radio family for the same.

2 Thess 3:1-2:

Finally, brethern, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you: And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

2nd LETTER 9/21/01
"And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled"

(Luke 14:23)

Friday, September 21, 2001

Our teams went to various locations today. One caught the early crowd at a large bus station before breakfast. We learned that over 300,000 people commute into Port of Spain from outlying areas every weekday, mostly by bus. Another team visited a hospital, schools, a university, and the busy downtown area. The third team traveled by taxi to a centrally located city called Chaguanas and distributed tracts at some large markets and shopping malls there. The reception to the "Does God Love You?" tracts continued to be excellent everywhere we worked.

Apparently, the unrest caused by the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, DC has produced much anxiety among the people here and many have expressed a concern that the end of the world may be near. When that concern is mentioned to us, we sometimes have an opportunity to point to the first question on the tract that asks, "If He is a loving God, why is there so much suffering and sorrow in the world?" and then to the question on the back that asks, "Are you reading to meet God?"

We purchased a large quantity of KJV Bibles with funds donated by a number of Family Radio listeners for that purpose. There seems to be a spiritual hunger for the Word of God in this country, and we greatly appreciate the prayer and financial participation in these mission trips by many listeners.

Saturday, September 22, 2001

Saturday morning is the primary shopping time of the week here. By God's wonderful grace, the distribution of Bibles, tracts and Family Radio materials continued at a rapid pace today in several crowded markets and shopping malls in Port of Spain. Many printed cards describing the free correspondence courses offered by Family Radio School of the Bible and listing the short-wave schedules have been graciously accepted everywhere we worked.

A woman in one of the markets who used to live in the US was excited to receive a Family Radio tract. She had been a regular listener in the US and said she would purchase a short-wave radio now that she learned that English programming can be heard in Trinidad.

One of our missionaries who grew up in Trinidad brought a large supply of DGLY? tracts in the Chinese language and was able to share them with many Chinese vendors in the markets. One lady who took a tract said she was a Christian with an outreach to the Chinese people and was very happy to receive our missionary's whole pack of Chinese tracts to assist with her witnessing efforts.

Another lady who had been a Family Radio listener in the US put us in touch with a man who airs Christian programming on a powerful AM radio station in Port of Spain and who showed an interest in Family Radio programs.

One team traveled to the southern city of San Fernando to work in the busy shopping areas and was given free access to all the wards in a large hospital there. They also met a Christian couple that owns a printing outfit and has a Bible-teaching ministry. Those people were very interested in reproducing the "Does God Love You?" tract and other Family Radio materials to continue the distribution of the Gospel of Christ in Trinidad. We praise our Lord for sending people to help us in so many ways and for opening so many doors for the True Gospel on these mission trips.

Sunday, September 23, 2001

After our own Lord's Day worship service this morning, our teams visited several parks and recreational areas around Port of Spain where families tend to congregate on Sunday afternoons. One team shared was given access to all the patients in a large hospital and distributed tracts to many visitors as well.

Most places of business are closed on Sunday, and the downtown area was nearly deserted. However, the relaxed atmosphere provided several opportunities to witness on a personal basis.

The man we met yesterday who broadcasts Christian programming invited four members of our group to his studio for a live interview. We spoke briefly about the ministry of Family Radio and the nature of our work in Trinidad.

God permitting, we will complete the work the Lord has given us to do in Trinidad on Monday and will fly to the South American country of Guyana early Tuesday morning. We plan to send Report #3 on Wednesday, September 26.

"Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God
is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh
righteousness, is accepted with him" (Acts 10:34-35)

May God richly bless you.

MISSION TO TRINIDAD & GUYANA
3rd LETTER 9/24/01

"Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you"

John 20:21

Monday, September 24, 2001

By God's grace, our group of seven men and three women finished distributing our supply of Bibles and "Does God Love You?" tracts in various parts of Port of Spain, Trinidad today.

Our group leader delivered a large number of Bibles, tracts, and other Family Radio materials to the largest prison in Trinidad and had an opportunity to minister to the administrative and security staff there. The head of the Trinidad prison system is a Christian man who liked the tract and greatly appreciated the materials. He assured us that all the materials would be distributed to the inmates at several prisons in an appropriate manner. We pray that God will guide him according to His will for that task.

Several people we encountered in various places in Port of Spain mentioned to us that they had heard the radio interview on Sunday afternoon. Others said they listened to Family Radio while living in the US, and a few told us they listen by short wave and the Internet in Trinidad. We are always happy to meet Family Radio listeners as we travel to various parts on the world on these mission trips.

Tuesday, September 25, 2001

We flew to Georgetown, Guyana this morning as planned. Guyana is a small country on the east coast of South America south of Venezuela and is the only English-speaking country on this continent.

Our hotel is ideally located in the bustling center of this capital city and is surrounded by busy street markets, offices, and bus stops. Many people even commute by small open boats carrying about 30 or so people (all wearing life jackets) on the large river that flows past the city. We quickly discovered that God has provided an open door for the Gospel of Christ in this country as well. Like Trinidad, the people here comprise many ethnic, cultural, and religious groups; but the reception to the tracts was excellent everywhere our group went this afternoon.

Wednesday, September 26, 2001

We branched out from the center of the city today to visit many markets, schools and other busy locations. Some of our group went to the port area before breakfast to catch the early boat commuters, vendors and shoppers. All teams continued the tract distribution work at a brisk pace and observed very few discarded tracts. Many people are observed reading the tracts intently as they interrupt their daily routines to learn about God's Magnificent Salvation Plan for all the peoples of the world.

Three men visited a large men's prison after lunch with a supply of locally purchased KJV Bibles, tracts and Family Radio materials. They met with a group of about 60 inmates in the prison chapel, distributed Bibles and tracts to them, and gave a brief presentation of the True Gospel and the ministry of Family Radio. They gave the chaplain several thousand tracts and more Bibles for distribution to other inmates in that prison and in some other prisons in Guyana.

God willing, we will send Report #4 on Friday, September 28.

"And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nation, beginning in Jerusalem"

Luke 24:46-47

May God richly bless you.

5th LETTER 9/27/01

"Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you"

John 15:16

Thursday, September 27, 2001

Our work here in Georgetown, Guyana continued at a rapid pace today. We visited several schools, universities, a large hospital, a few markets, and the waterfront area to distribute the "Does God Love You?" tracts to everyone who would accept them and the KJV Bibles to those who show a special interest in God's Word.
Our diverse group of ten is doing an excellent job. Together we represent seven different countries by birth and range in age from early 20s to 70 something. The weather has been hot and humid but with no rain to hamper our work. Our Lord has kept us all safe and healthy for the whole trip, and we are grateful to Him for that. We are always mindful of our Savior's words in John 15:5 that reads, "I am the vine, ye are the branches; He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." Please pray that God will bring forth much spiritual fruuit from Trinidad and Guyana for His harvest.
God has also provided several Guyanese who have been assisting this mission effort with logistical matters during the planning stage and during oour visit. There are always many details that must be handled on these trips, and we thank our Lord that things are moving along smoothly. God willing, we will complete the distribution of our entire supply of 80,000 tracts and a few hundred Bibles on Sunday.
Friday, September 28, 2001
Friday and Saturday are the busiest days of the week for the markets where throngs of people visit for shopping and socializing. Today we worked in several large market areas in Georgetown and a suburb called Lusignan, which lies to the east on the coast.
Since we plan to travel back home on Monday, this will probably be our last report from here. As God allows, two teams will travel to some other cities on Saturday. One will go by car to the village of Leonora where there is a very large and busy market on Saturdays. Another team will travel first by bus and then by speedboat for about an hour to the village of Bartica.
On Sunday morning we plan to visit a market in Parika where many indigenous people bring their produce by canoes from their remote villages. Sunday afternoon will be at time for worship and rest in preparation for our return trip. Please pray that God will continue to bless us with good health, the strength to do His will for our remaining time in Guyana, and for a safe journey home

"Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world"

1 John 4:13-14

May God richly bless the ministry of Family Radio and all of its listeners and supporters.
